University open days - the more the merrier?

By Johnny Adamsom

Questions, questions, questions: which university open days should you attend? How often can you afford to go travelling across the country? How often are you going to be allowed to take the day off for an open day during termtime? How are you going to decide who to bring along? And what kind of questions should you be asking at an open day?

In theory, attending every university open day going - at least for those establishments offering the degree course you want - would be an excellent idea, but that might not be too practical - especially if you're thinking about going abroad for your university education. But if it's possible, the more open days you can get to, the more you'll get used to them and the more information you'll be able to look for.

Here's a hint: how about attending your very first open day at a university that's easy to get to ... and that you're not planning on shortlisting anyway? That's going to take the pressure off, because you won't have to constantly wonder whether you're asking all the right questions - the ones that could make or break not just your university education, but also your entire future.

But there will be a time when you arrive at your first, serious university open day, and with luck you'll have decided whether or not to take anyone with you (and if so, who - should you choose the person with the sharpest pair of eyes you can swap notes with afterwards, or the person with the car and enough cash for a decent lunch?). And while you're at the open day, try and imagine what the whole area's going to be like on a miserable winter's day, because you'll have three years' worth of winters to put up with.

But don't just limit yourself to advertised university open days - if you're canny about it, you can visit a university any time and look around it without all the hard(ish) sell... and you'll get a much better idea of what life's really like there. Plus you can do everything in your own time, except, perhaps for an appointment with the tutor you'd like to talk to ... and come away with a much clearer picture of the university and its surroundings. And if you don't have all the information you need for that all-important decision, there's nothing to stop you from making repeat visits.
